Rigid Core and Composite Floor Installation in Baltimore, MD
Rigid core flooring is the toughest waterproof floor you can put in a home. It is dense, stable, and built to take a beating without buckling. At CSE Flooring & Interiors, I install rigid core SPC and WPC flooring across Baltimore and about 50 miles around Parkville, and I handle every plank myself.
Rigid core is a step up from standard luxury vinyl. Its stone-polymer or wood-polymer core is dimensionally stable, which means it does not expand and contract much with temperature and humidity. That stability makes it a favorite for sunrooms, basements, kitchens and older homes with imperfect subfloors.

Who It Is Right For
Rigid core is the right choice for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, sunrooms and any room with temperature swings or moisture. It is fully waterproof and handles spills, pets and heavy foot traffic without complaint.
It is also a strong pick for older homes with subfloors that are not perfectly flat, because the rigid core hides minor imperfections better than flexible luxury vinyl.
Who It Is Not Right For
Rigid core is not the right choice if you want the genuine feel and refinishing potential of real hardwood. It is a high-performance composite, not wood.
It is also heavier and denser than standard luxury vinyl, which is a benefit for durability but means the subfloor still needs to be sound. Very uneven subfloors require leveling even with a rigid core.
What the Install Looks Like, Done by the Owner
From the first measure to the final walkthrough, one person handles your floor. No crew handoffs, no subcontractors you never met.
Every rigid core job starts with an in-home measure. I measure the space, check the subfloor for flatness and moisture, and help you choose between SPC and WPC and the look that fits your home.
On install day, I prep the subfloor. Rigid core hides minor imperfections, but the subfloor still needs to be flat and clean. I level as needed and address moisture with the right underlayment.
The planks click together as a floating floor, with tight seams and a natural stagger. I cut around cabinets, doorways and vents, and install transitions where the floor meets other rooms.
I do a final walkthrough with you to check the seams, the transitions and the overall look before I leave.
What Baltimore Area Homes Mean for This Floor
Rigid core is especially useful in Maryland because it handles temperature swings without buckling. Sunrooms, three-season rooms and homes with large temperature changes benefit from its dimensional stability, which is better than standard luxury vinyl.
Many Baltimore area homes are older rowhomes and postwar houses with uneven subfloors. The rigid core hides minor subfloor imperfections better than flexible planks, which is why it is common in these homes. I still level significant dips. If your home has old 9 inch by 9 inch floor tiles underneath, have them tested for asbestos before removal; this is honest advice, not a service I offer.
Types and Options
The choices within this category, and how they change the look, the durability and the price.
SPC (stone polymer core)
A dense core made with stone powder. Extremely stable and dent resistant, making it a top choice for high-traffic and commercial spaces.
WPC (wood polymer core)
A core made with wood and plastic. Slightly softer and warmer underfoot than SPC, with excellent sound absorption for homes.
Attached underlayment
Many rigid core planks have an attached pad, which speeds up install and adds sound control. Some jobs still need a separate moisture underlayment.
Wood and stone looks
Rigid core comes in realistic wood-look planks and stone-look tiles, so it fits any room style while staying waterproof.
What Affects the Cost
I do not publish prices, because every job is measured and quoted by hand. These are the factors that shape your estimate.
SPC versus WPC, with the denser SPC generally costing more and offering more stability.
The thickness of the plank and the attached underlayment.
The wear layer thickness, which affects scratch and wear resistance.
Subfloor prep and leveling, common in older Baltimore homes.
Removal of old flooring and the size of the space.
Stairs and transitions, which add detail and labor.
Rigid Core & Composite Flooring Questions, Answered
What is the difference between rigid core and luxury vinyl?+
Rigid core has a dense stone or wood polymer core that is more dimensionally stable than standard luxury vinyl. It hides minor subfloor imperfections better and resists temperature changes, which is why it is common in sunrooms and older homes.
Is rigid core waterproof?+
Yes. Rigid core is fully waterproof, which makes it a strong choice for kitchens, bathrooms, basements and rooms with spills and moisture.
What is the difference between SPC and WPC?+
SPC has a stone polymer core that is denser and more dent resistant, ideal for high traffic. WPC has a wood polymer core that is slightly softer and warmer underfoot with better sound absorption. I help you choose based on the room.
Does rigid core need a flat subfloor?+
It hides minor imperfections better than flexible planks, but the subfloor still needs to be flat. Significant dips require leveling, which is common in older Baltimore homes.
Can rigid core go in a sunroom?+
Yes. Its dimensional stability handles temperature swings without buckling, which makes it a great fit for sunrooms and three-season rooms in Maryland.
Is rigid core good for pets?+
Very good. It is waterproof, scratch resistant and dent resistant, which handles pets, spills and heavy traffic well.
Can rigid core be installed over existing flooring?+
Sometimes, if the existing floor is flat, stable and well-bonded. I assess it during the measure. Cushioned floors and carpet must come out first.
